Talaya C. Martin, 30, of Severn, was driving on a suspended license when she lost control of her vehicle on Route 295 around 4:30 a.m., April 4, 2021, Maryland State Police said.

The driver of a Honda, Marlon J. King, 45, saw Martin approaching his car at a high rate of speed and switched lanes to avoid a collision. However, Martin lost control of her vehicle and veered across the northbound lanes before hitting King's car, police said.

Martin's vehicle continued to strike a median, pass through a guardrail,  and hit several trees before coming to a rest on its side at the bottom of a hill.

Her son, 9-month-old Ezekial Martin, was not secured in a car seat and was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Martin was transported to a hospital for treatment of her injuries. King was not injured.

Martin was arrested May 25 and charged with several child abuse and manslaughter-related offenses. She was being held at the Anne Arundel County Detention Center without bond.
